Plans are well underway for the first millimetre telescope in Africa - the Africa Millimetre Telescope (AMT) - that is to be built at the Gamsberg west of Windhoek.
In the meantime, an existing 15 m single-mirror radio telescope is currently being renovated in Chile and is intended to provide an important connection to the network of telescopes worldwide known as the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which discovered a black hole some time ago.
The AMT is a 15 m single-mirror telescope that will operate at millimetre wavelengths. The existing telescope being renovated for use in Namibia. It was donated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO).
Last year, the University of Namibia (UNAM) signed the framework agreement with the Dutch Radboud University in Windhoek to realise the collaboration for the AMT. Financing for the project has now been secured.
