Relief for Havana fire victims
The government, through the Moses //Garoeb Constituency Office, stepped in to provide aid to families affected by a fire that destroyed four homes in Havana. The fire, which broke out on 1 March at around 11:00, left 27 people homeless, including students from Welwitchia, I-Care, the International University, Namcol and a primary school learner.
During an official handover ceremony held in Windhoek today, the government provided 60 corrugated iron sheets, 30 poles, and 12-pack pine to assist the affected families in rebuilding their homes. In addition to this building material, each household received essential food supplies, including 5kg of rice, 750ml of cooking oil, and canned fish to help them navigate this difficult time.
Speaking at the event, Stefanus Ndengu, councillor of Moses //Garoeb constituency, reaffirmed the government's commitment to standing in solidarity with those in need. “In times of hardship, you are not alone. Our government, through the Moses //Garoeb Constituency Office, is dedicated to bringing relief and support to our community,” he stated.
While acknowledging that the donation may not replace all that was lost, the initiative is seen as a step toward restoring dignity and stability to the affected families. Community leaders, stakeholders, and well-wishers were also praised for their contributions in making the relief effort possible, since their commitment and generosity have played a crucial role in easing the burden faced by the affected families.
Despite her sadness over what happened to them, Tresia Shiwa Paulus, one of the fire victims, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying, "We lost everything, even all my school things. We are learning to start over, but assistance is still appreciated."
As the rebuilding process begins, the government assured the community that its doors remain open to continue working toward long-term solutions. The representative encouraged the affected families to remain hopeful and resilient, emphasising that unity and perseverance will see them through this challenging time.
