Shoprite’s Mobile Soup Kitchens served more than 50 000 cups of warm, nutritious soup and bread to communities across Namibia over the last three months.
The two mobile soup kitchens travel thousands of kilometres to relieve hunger, serving approximately 15 000 cups of warm, nutritious soup and bread to communities across Namibia each month. They are also often among the first responders when disasters such as floods or fires disrupt community life.
“The Shoprite Mobile Soup Kitchens have become a symbol of hope for the many beneficiary organisations – including schools, old age homes and orphanages – we assist across Namibia. With support from Bakpro and Knorr, we continue to serve hundreds of vulnerable people daily,” says Paul Malan, Divisional Manager of Shoprite Namibia.
Hunger relief and food security are at the core of the Shoprite Group’s corporate social investment programmes and its Mobile Soup Kitchens are one of the many ways in which the retailer fights hunger in communities.
Its fleet of more than 30 trucks that operate across South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Angola and Lesotho, served more than 7 million meals in the last financial year.
