SPCA opens Henties branch
The SPCA officially opened a new branch in Henties Bay on 1 December. This move came after the management of the SPCA in Henties Bay (formerly Angel Animals Home) realised they needed additional support and guidance for the sake of the animals in their care. “They reached out to SPCA Namibia and enrolment discussions began, which included administrative paperwork, site visits, and animal care plans,” national director Hanna Rhodin said.
According to branch manager Natasha Britz, Henties Bay is home to many stray and free-roaming dogs with homes not enclosed by a yard that wander around in town.
“Feral cats are also an issue. Many of these animals are under-socialised or people selective, difficult to catch, and can be a safety concern for people, other animals and traffic. Some animals suffer from malnutrition and owners struggle to provide an adequate diet for their pets.”
She adds that there is also a big issue with ticks, fleas and mange affecting cats and dogs in Henties Bay.
“Unsterilized animals keep giving birth, further putting strain on what often is already scarce food sources. Many pet owners are unable to pay for veterinary care and medical treatment. Unfortunately, there is no permanent veterinarian in Henties Bay.”
Setup
SPCA Henties Bay’s shelter can house about 20 dogs and 40 cats. “We have 15 dog kennels, two cattery areas, six cat cages, ten boarding dog kennels, and a newly built green dog garden where dogs can play and potential adopters can meet their match,” Britz said.
“We are also uniquely set up with boarding availability for horses, which currently house over 30 privately owned horses. The proceeds from the stables go directly to fund the SPCA’s operations and the care of the homeless pets. The eight staff members are split between caring for the cats, dogs, and horses.”
She said that while they don’t have a vehicle to collect stray animals, they try their best to assist where they can.”
Future plans
“I think the most important promise from SPCA Henties Bay is that we aim to work together with the community, the municipality and other animal welfare organisations and groups to help maltreated, abandoned, abused, unsterilized and unvaccinated animals.
“Any support from our community means the world to us. For those interested in joining our first Annual General Meeting, we would like to welcome members of our community on 4 February 2025 at 12:00 at LukZet where we will be electing our first branch committee.”
