Chelsea enters the 2024-25 season with high expectations under new manager Enzo Maresca. According to British newspaper, The Guardian, Chelsea’s management remains confident, with sources close to the club stating that the Blues are “quietly optimistic” about their European prospects.
UEFA playoffs and European ambitions
The UEFA playoff rounds kicked off yesterday across the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, with Chelsea preparing for a crucial first leg tie against Servette FC tomorrow at 21h00.
Securing qualification is vital for Chelsea as they look to restore their European form after missing out on the champions league last season.
Transfer Activity
Chelsea remains active in the transfer market, with notable developments including the re-signing of João Félix.
The Portuguese forward travelled to London yesterday to undergo a medical before finalizing a six year contract.
Conor Gallagher flew to Madrid today completing his move to Atletico Madrid, where he will be unveiled later.
Romelu Lukaku remains a key exit target, with Napoli and former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte interested in his services.
Maresca hinted in his latest press conference that 20-year-old midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka could also leave this summer.
"Decisions have to be made for the benefit of the player and the club," he said.
The online publication, The Athletic mentioned several other players, namely Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, Ben Chilwell, David Datro Fofana, Djordje Petrovic, and Armando Broja, who are also listed to be transferred. .
Reports are suggesting that many of these players have been training away from the first-team squad, signalling their likely departure before the transfer deadline on 30 August.
Ambition and reality
Chelsea’s challenge this season lies in balancing their ambitions with the realities of a largely inexperienced squad and ongoing transfer market saga.
Cole Palmer’s 2023-24 season with Chelsea was impressive, as he registered 29 goals and 15 assists in total.
Palmer’s versatility in playing as an attacking midfielder or winger makes him a key asset for the Blues. If he maintains consistency, he could be a pivotal figure for Chelsea again this season.
