Rugby lovers can look forward to a potentially interesting match-up when the first-team squads of FNB Wanderers and FNB Grootfontein take each other on in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
With new dates for the Namibia Rugby Union’s proposed regional series not yet announced following the national suspension of sports events during the previous weekend’s presidential memorial and funeral, the two clubs agreed to meet on Saturday.
The NRU premier league starts on 9 March, when Grootfontein will play at home against current title holders Trustco United. Meanwhile, Wanderers will kick off their campaign against FNB Unam at the students’ stadium.
Team lists for Saturday’s friendly between Wanderers and Grootfontein – to be played at the field of Pionierspark Primary School – could not be obtained yesterday.
However, Grootfontein’s Welwitschias hooker Wikus Jacobs confirmed that the visitors from the north intend fielding a reasonably strong team including himself, prop Nelius Theron, loose forwards Johan Luttig and Pieter Daan Kok.
Niel Holtzhausen (former Namibia U18 and U20 centre) is also available for Grootfontein this season, after a stand-out season for Wanderers last year, Jacobs revealed.
Wanderers won the Castle Lite Trustco United ten-a-side tournament when its first team beat Unam 12-5 in the final.
On Saturday, the first match will be played between Vipers and the second team of Wanderers (14:30), before the main match at 16:15.
