The Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) League will return this weekend following a four-week break since 19 May to reorganize, prepare and plan for the continuation of the country's top basketball league.
The current standings are tight with UNAM Rebels leading the men's Premier League and UNAM Phoenix on top in the womens' Premier League.
Allan Nghixulifwa, UNAM's sports officer and KBA League advisor, emphasized the positive aspects of the break.
"For all our seven UNAM teams, we always use the break to our advantage. We aimed to keep the competitive edge over the other teams. We have had intensive workout sessions with other sports codes like rugby to improve other skills.
“We're confident in our preparations and ready to resume the league.”
Nghixulifwa also captains the UNAM Wolves, highlighting that the break has not negatively impacted his players' performances.
Notably, he mentioned key players to watch, including Anna Iimene of UNAM Phoenix and Kevin Kazadi of UNAM Wolves. "Iimene has been the heart of her team, often sacrificing her own scoring opportunities to support her teammates’ growth.”
Meanwhile, Kazadi is an exceptional young player who, with a bit more “killer instinct”, could become a dominant force in the league, he said.
The break provided a much-needed rest for players nursing injuries and a chance for others to improve their fitness levels.
Despite the benefits, the break has posed some challenges, especially for the development of new referee recruits. Game official and referee Shilongo Nekundi commented: "The break has stunted our recruit training for our new officials as six weeks without them being on the scene could impact their progress and game fluidity.”
