Nedbank Cycle Challenge returns
Road cycling
The 2025 Nedbank Cycle Challenge is set to take place on Sunday, with cyclists from across the country preparing to take part in one of Namibia’s most iconic annual sporting events. The event did not take place last year following the passing of President Hage Geingob, with organisers opting to cancel the race out of respect during the national mourning period.
Now back on the calendar, the race – dubbed “The Greatest Ride Under the Sun” – will begin at 07:00 from the Nedbank Campus, located at the corner of Fidel Castro Street and Rev. Michael Scott Street in Windhoek.
Cyclists can choose between 20 km, 30 km, 60 km, or 100 km routes, all finishing in front of Zoo Park on Independence Avenue.
Registration and race number collection will take place the day before the race, on Saturday, 12 April, at the Nedbank Campus between 14:00 and 16:00.
Speaking ahead of the event, JG van Graan, executive for retail and business banking at Nedbank Namibia, reiterated the bank’s commitment to the development of cycling in the country.
“Nedbank Namibia has been a proud supporter of cycling in Namibia, contributing significantly to the growth and development of the sport,” he said. “This year's event promises to be bigger and better, with meticulous preparations ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.”
Van Graan also highlighted the bank’s broader vision: “As money experts who do good, we are thrilled to host this edition of the Nedbank Cycle Challenge and continue our commitment to promoting cycling in Namibia. Our team has worked tirelessly to ensure the event is well-organised and memorable. We believe in the power of sport to bring communities together and inspire healthy lifestyles.”
Gerhard Breed of the Windhoek Pedal Power Road Cycling Club, who also serves as organiser of the challenge, praised the event’s growth over the years.
“The progression of the Nedbank Cycle Challenge has been remarkable,” he said. “Each year, we see new and returning participants take on the challenge with enthusiasm. We are excited to see what 2025 holds and are confident this will be our best event yet.”
The Nedbank Cycle Challenge continues to serve as a platform not only for competitive cyclists, but also for recreational riders looking to enjoy the sport in a vibrant and inclusive environment.
In a fun twist, Sport Wrap journalists Brian Munango and Andrew Poolman will also be participating in this year’s challenge, entering the 20 km category as part of their coverage and personal commitment to active lifestyles.
