The Central Volleyball Association (CVA) League saw Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) teams dominate all their matches in the first round of the season held at Windhoek’s University of Namibia (Unam) Gym Hall.
An action-packed day of six matches across the men’s and women’s divisions began with debutants Namibia Defense Force (NDF) beating Unam Queens B in straight sets to win the first match 3-0 in the ladies’ division. The Namibia Defense Force team was formed after NDF Phoenixes were promoted to the VNL.
A highly contested Nust Falcons and Unam Kings D clash saw the latter fall to the Nust team 3-1 in the men’s division. A newly registered men’s division club, Training Establishment, faced challenges, losing all its sets to Nust Blazers for a 3-0 defeat.
Another ladies’ clash saw Nust reign supreme, beating Revivals 3-0.
In the men’s division, a tightly contested NDF Hurricane clash against Kudos saw the latter fall 3-1 to NDF. Defending champions NamPower started the season on a high note, claiming straight sets against City of Windhoek to win 3-0.
Speaking to Sport Wrap about their first strong showing of the season, NamPower captain David Katoma admitted that he feels they could do more as defending champions.
“Despite it being an easy game for us, we didn’t exceed our supporters’ expectations, if I’m being honest. We need to do more and be the [formidable] NamPower we used to be. We have to approach the next games with high morale and stay strong both in defence and offence. I feel like the energy this weekend was a bit low. We need to turn up moving forward,” he said.
CVA League chairperson Veronica Sampapi lauded the level of competition the teams brought out on the opening day. “[The matches were] highly competitive, as every team brought their A-game. Many teams played several friendly games leading up to the league, and one can really see the results of all the hard work and preparation paying off. I absolutely love to see it!”
