Omusati edges out Kavango East for the title

The Omusati region’s football team emerged victorious in the 2024 Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup, after a thrilling penalty shoot-out against Kavango East.
The tournament, which took place at the Legare Stadium in Gobabis, ended in a 0-0 draw in both full-time and extra-time, leading to a nail-biting showdown between the two finalists in a penalty shoot out.
With the Omusati region's players demonstrating incredible skill and composure, they were able to secure a 3-1 victory in the shoot-out, clinching the championship title in convincing style, since they did not concede a goal in regular time of any match.
This victory marks the second time the Omusati region has won the prestigious cup, with their first victory coming in 2015.
Despite a tense and goalless match, both teams displayed impressive tactics and determination. Kavango East put up a strong fight and created several opportunities to score, but were unable to find the back of the net.
On the other hand, Omusati’s defence remained resolute and managed to withstand the attacks of their opponents, which proved to be the key to their success in the tournament.
• Meanwhile, the Namibia under-17 boys football team faced a challenging match against German regional side Westphalia yesterday, ultimately losing by a goal to nil in their second and final encounter at Gobabis. The Namibians played to an entertaining 2-2 draw against the Europeans at Swakopmund last week.

NETBALL
In the Newspaper Cup netball tournament, defending champions Khomas put on another dominant display as they claimed a convincing 47-25 victory over Oshana in the final.
The fast-paced and thrilling match showcased the skill and resilience of the Khomas team, as they secured another championship title in the competition. Kavango East also had a successful run in the netball tournament, finishing in third place with a close 31-30 victory over Otjozondjupa.
