The 30-year-old Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau has officially joined Qatar SC. According to South African news publication Zimoja Lezinto, Tau signed with the Doha-based club after passing a medical and agreeing to personal terms.
Furthermore, the publication stated that the former Al Ahly forward, who earned an impressive R1.9 million monthly salary during his stint with the Egyptian giants, will now pocket a jaw-dropping N$16.8 million per month at Qatar SC.
According to reports, the Qatar club paid US$450 000 (N$8.5 million) for the services of the Witbank-born star.
Tau is expected to make his debut for Qatar SC on January 17 in the Qatar-UAE Super Cup and Super Shield matchups.
The team will face Al Nasr at the Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai. At his new club, Tau reunites with former Al Ahly teammates Ahmed Abdelkader (25) and Badr Banoun (31).
While at Al Ahly, Tau enjoyed a fruitful career, becoming a fan favorite under coach Pitso Mosimane, who signed him from Mamelodi Sundowns.
During his tenure at Al Ahly SC, the former CAF Interclub Player of the Year scooped two CAF Champions League titles, 126 appearances, 30 goals, and 14 assists. Tau’s contributions solidified Al Ahly’s dominance on the continent.
According to African Football, Tau’s contract with Qatar SC is initially for six months, with an option to extend for another year if the club avoids relegation. His decision to join the Qatari league came after interest from clubs like Zamalek SC and Mosimane’s Esteghlal FC.
Qatar SC announced his arrival on their social media platforms, stating, “Percy Tau is Qatari.”
With this move, Tau aims to reignite his international career after being overlooked during South Africa’s recent successful 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
His last appearance for Bafana Bafana was in June 2024 during a 1-1 draw with Nigeria.
