Rundu, Ncamagoro dominate teachers' tournament
The Rundu Circuit emerged victorious in soccer and volleyball, while the Ncamagoro Circuit claimed the top spot in netball at Sanlam's sixth annual Teachers' Tournament in Rundu.Sponsored by Sanlam, the five-day event was held under the theme, "A Healthy Teacher is a Productive Teacher."
The tournament highlighted the importance of well-being, teamwork, and resilience, not only in the classroom but beyond. It also fostered camaraderie and collaboration among educators from different regions.
The chairperson of the organising committee Chester Mutangara described the tournament as a resounding success, attracting both teachers and community members.
“The games were played within circuits, meaning that teachers formed teams representing their circuits in netball, volleyball, and soccer. All circuits, both within and outside the region, were invited to participate. We had around 22 teams from different regions who travelled to take part,” he said.
Mutangara emphasized the event’s purpose, saying “The aim was to bring teachers together. Secondly, a healthy teacher is a productive teacher, so the focus was on wellness—and that was the most important thing. We want Sanlam to continue with this great initiative. It’s not easy to provide such significant funding, but we are very grateful for their commitment. If possible, we hope they continue supporting us financially. In return, they will surely benefit, as many of us teachers have policies with Sanlam as well.”
On behalf of the organising committee, he expressed deep appreciation to Sanlam for sponsoring the 2024 tournament with a contribution of N$100 000.
During a courtesy visit by the winning teams, Kavango East Region’s Director of Education, Arts, and Culture Christine Shilima, praised the teams for their achievements and pledged a cow to the Rundu Circuit teams.
Additionally, the Rundu Education Inspector Julia Kangungu pledged both a goat and a cow to the teams, urging the teachers to not only excel in sports but also work towards making the Rundu Circuit the top performer in academic achievement.
