African Stars Football Club team manager, Lesley Kozonguizi, has revealed that the team is shaping up well ahead of the 2024-2025 football season, as well as the upcoming Hage Geingob Cup.
The champions begin this season aiming for a consecutive league title when the Premier League kicks off in November. Stars have already played a few games in the CAF Champions League preliminaries this season but bowed out of the competition following a loss to Jwaneng Galaxy over two legs.
Kozonguizi, however, is confident that the players have put that behind them and are now focused on winning domestic trophies this season.
“I can say that the team has started training, and the players look ready for the season, although we still have work to do to get them to the best level. We have made several signings during the window, and I must say they are gelling well with the rest, but we still have to see how far they have gelled in competitive fixtures,” Kozonguizi said.
The Namibia Premier Football season looms, but African Stars’ focus has shifted to the Hage Geingob Cup as they prepare to face Eeshoke Chula Chula on Saturday.
The ‘Reds’ will be out for revenge against Eeshoke Chula Chula after losing 1-0 in their last meeting in the Hage Geingob Cup last year.
“It will be an important fixture, and our players will just have to be on top of their game to avoid a repeat of last year. The only challenge we have right now is that some of our players are on national duty, and we will probably only have them back by Wednesday or Thursday. However, we are inviting all our fans to come in their numbers on Saturday and fill up the Independence Stadium,” Kozonguizi noted.
The Hage Geingob Cup will feature three football matches, with African Stars facing PstBet, last year’s winners Eeshoke Chula Chula. In the women’s event, Ongos Ladies will compete against Girls & Goals.
The winners of the men’s match will receive N$300,000, while the runners-up will take home N$150,000. In the women’s match, the winners will be awarded N$200,000, and the runners-up N$100,000.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Geingob family to support the establishment of the Dr Hage Geingob Memorial Library.
