Metropolitan Gravity Cup launched
Metropolitan announced its sponsorship of the much-anticipated Metropolitan Gravity Cup school sports tournament set to take place from 26 to 28 October at Affies Park in Windhoek.
The anticipation surrounding the tournament is evident with 39 (nine private and 30 state) schools and 136 teams lined up to showcase their talent across various sports disciplines. These teams are set to display their skill in Soccer 6-A-Side, Netball, Hockey 5’s, and Rugby 7’s, underlining the vast range of athletic talent present within Namibian schools.
“At Metropolitan, we've always believed in the transformative power of community engagement,” says Ingah Ekandjo, Metropolitan Retail's Executive Officer. “This tournament is more than just sports; it's about making a lasting impact in communities across the country. Investing in our youth through sports not only fosters talent but shapes the leaders of tomorrow.”
Inclusive development
The “Blue Ticket Winners” initiative is a testament to Metropolitan's commitment to inclusive community development. Schools were invited to submit motivations explaining why they deserved an opportunity at this event.
Winners of this initiative enjoy an all-expenses-paid experience. Specifically, Metropolitan covers entry fees, transport, accommodation, and meals for 50 individuals from the winning schools over four days. The schools selected for this year are Shamangorwa Secondary School (Kavango East), Empelheim Secondary School (Hardap), Xungileni Primary School (Omusati) and Opuwo Primary School (Kunene).
According to Valentines Kamenye, Principal of Shamangorwa Secondary School, this opportunity goes beyond mere sports entertainment. “It represents a holistic approach to the development of young Namibians, focusing not just on physical aptitude but on overall personal growth. It fills us with pride to be the first school from the Kavango East region to be acknowledged in such a manner. Our heartfelt thanks extend to Metropolitan for recognising and nurturing the potential in our students.”
Hot matches
Spanning three days, attendees can expect over 300 matches from u/13 to u/19 categories. The public is invited to this display of talent, dedication, and sportsmanship. Additionally, food vendors will be present to provide a culinary delight to the attendees.
Shaun Powell, of Gravity Sportswear & Nutrition, the official organiser, commented, “The Metropolitan Gravity Cup represents the spirit of dedication, passion, and unity among our youth. Collaborating with Metropolitan, we aim to provide a platform for young athletes to emerge as stars, bringing communities closer in the process.”
At the launch, Metropolitan thanked their co-sponsors Top Score, Namib Poultry, Nashua Namibia, Gravity Live, Indongo Toyota, and Click Internet, highlighting their crucial role in bringing the event to life.
