This past weekend, Namibian elite men’s mountain bike cyclist Alex Miller and South African elite women cyclist Candice Lill received top honours at the Nedbank XC1 and Junior XCO UCI races after they won the elite men’s and women’s races and received a total of 60 UCI points each to boost their rankings on the UCI World Ranking in 1 hour 31 minutes and 42 seconds, and 1 hour 15 minutes and 21 seconds respectively.South African junior men’s cyclist Ambrosi Massimiliano and Namibian junior women’s cyclist Ada Kahl won the Junior XCO race and accumulated 80 UCI points to boost their tally.
The race, which is the second round of the Nedbank XC Race Series, saw a number of top cyclists from Namibia, South Africa, and Lesotho battle it out for top honours in the different race categories.
Namibian Cycling Federation executive member Andreas Simon, who is also spearheading the development portfolio of the federation, officiated the prizegiving and lauded the work done in the cycling development space.
Development
“Development is amongst most of our important objectives at the federation and we will ensure the continuity of sport and development for future champions in Namibia. In 2022, the development of cycling has grown significantly from grassroots levels.
“We built a BMX track in Outapi, as our ambition is to expand the programme to other BMX centres and to grow the level of cycling in all regions of the country,” Simon said.
Speaking at the prizegiving, Nedbank Namibia’s head of marketing and communications, Gernot de Klerk, said that the bank remains privileged to be part of the Namibian cycling support team.
“It’s always a privilege to be supporting cycling. All the organising teams, the Namibian Cycling Federation, Rock and Rut in particular did a phenomenal job. The fact that we had so many international cyclists today is also a reason to celebrate as it’s the biggest field we’ve had for an event of this nature,” De Klerk said.
