Network Media Hub's (NMH) youth brand, My Zone, hosts its first school esports competition on 27 July at the MTC Innovation Hub at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST).
The competition aims to educate students on the diverse career prospects in the growing world of esports.
Open to primary and secondary school students aged 12 to 18, the event promises a day of exciting gaming activities.
The My Zone Schools Esports Competition features a variety of games for participants and spectators. Games such as FC24 (football simulator), NBA2K24 (basketball simulator) and the educational game AGEC (Allan Gray Entrepreneurship Challenge) are part of the line-up. Participants will have the chance to win prizes worth up to N$10 000.
The competition is overseen and managed by the Namibian Electronic Sports Association (NESA), which is the representative and umbrella organisation for electronic sports (esports) in Namibia.
According to NESA President, Flip De Bruyn, esports has great potential for economic and cultural impact in Namibia, adding that the esports industry creates thousands of jobs and could drive technological advancement, highlighting career opportunities in management, development, streaming, technical support and coaching.
Divaldo Tavares, a student at Niro Academy who registered for FC24, shared his excitement for the upcoming event, saying: “I will definitely win this competition. I am the best!”
Audley Haimbodi, a 15-year-old student at Windhoek High School, challenged all gamers in Windhoek, especially those from Windhoek Gymnasium with their school esports club. “Come and see if you can beat me!”
