The Gondwana Collection recently recognised three more tourism heroes: Mariane Akwenye, Toni Hart and Matheus Washinana were honoured for their efforts to promote sustainable and safe tourism in the country.
According to Gondwana, Mariane Akwenye helped a Swiss couple who were stranded with a flat tyre in the remote area of Sesriem during their four-week exploration of the country. Akwenye suggested that one of the travellers drive to the nearest town, Rehoboth, but the tyre repair shop originally located was non-existent. “Mariane quickly adapted to the situation and suggested going to Windhoek to have a wider range of options. Despite the challenges, Mariane's proactive approach ensured that the stranded tourist not only received new tyres but was also safely reunited with his partner after a 10-hour journey," Gondwana said.
Toni Hart was also recognised for her dedicated efforts to promote sustainable tourism in Namibia. Gondwana explained that Hart, who holds a National Diploma in Natural Resources Management, has served in various roles at Wilderness Safaris Namibia, demonstrating her commitment to sustainable tourism. “In addition to leading guided tours, she shares her expertise and support with a larger audience by serving as an administrator for Facebook groups such as Padlangs in Namibië - Roads in Namibia, DriveNam (DriveBots, Ango, Zam, Zim, Tan), Namibia from the Roadside, Namibia Tour Guides and Travelling Namibia & Botswana, where she actively engages with tourists and gives them valuable advice on travel, safety and other tourism-related topics.”
Matheus Washinana was also honoured for his commitment. “In one case he accompanied two cyclists who were on a trip from Cape Town to Nepal. Matheus not only showed them the way but also gave them invaluable advice on a safe route through the Buitepos border, taking into account the wildlife and possible challenges. When he encountered them again weeks later, parched and tired, Matheus selflessly provided them with necessities, demonstrating true hospitality and caring.”
