Works and transport minister John Mutorwa officially opened the upgraded 20 km section of the DR2612 road to Twyfelfontein - a World Heritage Site.
The road was renovated to a low-volume tarmac for N$36 million.
The Road Fund Administration (RFA) financed the project and the Roads Authority (RA) appointed Nexus Civils and Element Consulting Engineers as contractors.
The minister said that 48 employees of the Khorixas constituency were deployed to complete the work over a period of six months. However, he was not pleased that only two of these were women.
The upgrade was necessary as the daily road use increased from 170 vehicles in 2019 to 296 this year, he said.
“Not only tourists use the road, but the road also connects eight small communities with access to hospitals, schools and other government institutions,” he said.
He added that 12 resorts that employ up to 760 persons in the high season also use the road.
The road connects to the road to Henties Bay, Uis, Khorixas and Kamanjab, which are also being upgraded.
“Thus, due to the importance of this area and the increase in traffic, it became uneconomical to maintain the gravel road to standard, which led to the decision to upgrade the road,” he said.
