Discover Airlines announced Munich as its second departure airport and plans to introduce three weekly flights to Windhoek from 1 April 2025. This expansion represents an important step for the airline, which currently operates exclusively from Frankfurt.
Bernd Bauer, CEO of Discover Airlines, made the announcement on Friday. Bauer emphasised the airline's commitment to connecting travellers with attractive destinations and highlighted Namibia as an important location in its network. "As a leisure company, we take people to beautiful places and Namibia is one of our main destinations."
Discover Airlines, which is only three years old, benefits from its integration into the Lufthansa Group. Since inception, Discover Airlines has carried 600 000 passengers and contributed to strengthening the local economy in the countries where it operates. In Namibia, the airline partners with local companies such as Flaming Catering and Paragon Aviation Group to provide catering and baggage handling services, respectively. "By using the services of Flaming Catering and Paragon Aviation Group for baggage handling, we are adding value to the Namibian economy. We rely on them to operate while they rely on us to operate," Bauer said.
Bauer also addressed some challenges facing the aviation industry that could impact ticket prices for passengers. "Flight costs are high, as are fuel costs, and the increased taxes in Germany, such as the ticket fee and security fee, have added to the difficulties and led to higher ticket prices."
When asked about the recent introduction of visa requirements for German travellers to Namibia, Bauer replied that the impact on leisure travel depended mainly on the visa process and costs. "Some of the most beautiful destinations we fly to also have visas on arrival for travellers. My hope is that the more affordable and convenient the visa on arrival process is, the less it will affect leisure travel trends," he said.
