Flight 4Y142 departed Munich Airport at 21:35 local time on Tuesday, April 1, and landed at Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) in Windhoek at 07:10 on Wednesday, April 2. This direct connection is intended to further strengthen travel and economic relations between Namibia and Germany.
Since August 2021, Discover Airlines has been offering several weekly flights from Frankfurt to Windhoek. With the new connection from Munich, the service increases to a total of ten weekly flights between Namibia and Germany, including one daily flight from Frankfurt and three weekly flights from Munich.
At the launch in Windhoek on Wednesday evening, Marco Götz, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Discover Airlines, emphasised the airline's commitment to Namibia. "We are delighted to offer this new direct connection between Windhoek and Munich, a significant milestone for our airline and both countries. Since our first flights from Frankfurt, Windhoek has been one of our most frequently visited destinations. Demand from southern Germany is already high. Windhoek has always been a strong partner for us, and we look forward to further expanding this connection and offering our passengers even more travel options."
More than just tourism
Germany's Ambassador to Namibia, Thorsten Hutter, emphasised the economic and cultural benefits of the new flight connection. "This connection builds a bridge between Germany and Namibia. It is important not only for the tourism sector, but also for the local community and economy. When tourists arrive in Windhoek, they rent cars and travel throughout the country, which benefits the Namibian economy. I hope many people will take advantage of this opportunity."
Götz spoke to the media about the new direct flight between Munich and Windhoek. From Munich, Discover Airlines serves a variety of destinations, including long-haul flights to Orlando and Calgary – and now also Windhoek. As the airline specialises in leisure travel, Götz highlighted the high-quality onboard offerings, including 20 cocktails, Michelin-starred cuisine, access to the in-flight cloud and internet, and various travel classes with special options such as more legroom.
Götz announced that all Discover aircraft will be converted starting at the end of 2026 to ensure maximum comfort in all classes. Three aircraft have already been converted to offer more business class seats.
Ten flights per week
Discover Airlines currently flies daily between Windhoek and Frankfurt, serving the new Windhoek-Munich route on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. While the Frankfurt flight will continue to connect to Victoria Falls, this does not apply to the Munich flights. However, tourists can plan to travel from Munich to Windhoek and connect there on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays to Victoria Falls.
The CCO reflected on four years of operation, during which weekly flights to Windhoek increased from an initial three to five and now to ten per week. He estimates that Discover Airlines transported around 800 000 passengers on approximately 3 000 flights between August 2021 and April 2025.
Asked about the frequent flight cancellations at the end of 2024, Götz explained: "You can never rule out cancellations, but we have learned from these experiences and will minimise them as much as possible."
He advised passengers to provide their contact details, especially email addresses, when booking so they can be informed in such cases. He also recommended staying at the airport if possible, as staff there will assist stranded passengers.
When asked about the new visa regulations for German visitors, Götz said that visa issuance at the HKIA has been running smoothly so far. Should it become apparent that visa rejections pose a problem for the airline, Discover Airlines would consider conducting visa checks at German airports. "Currently, we trust the system and support our passengers wherever we can."
