Namib Mills announced that it will temporarily withdraw its popular Top Score Instant porridge from the market while an investigation is carried out into the safety of the product.
This comes after the deaths of three children in the Eastern Cape in South Africa who had apparently eaten the home-made porridge.
Namib Mills takes the tragedy very seriously, Senior Brand Manager Marné Bouwer said a statement released on Sunday.
She said: "Namib Mills is deeply saddened by the reports circulating in the media and on social media that three children in South Africa died after eating home-made porridge. It is alleged that one of our products, Top Score Instant, may be involved," the statement said.
Bouwer says Namib Mills shares its condolences with the families affected.
"While there is currently no evidence linking our product to this unfortunate incident, we are taking the matter very seriously."
As a precautionary measure, Namib Mills has decided to temporarily remove all Tops Score Instant from store shelves while an investigation is carried out.
"This is a proactive measure that reflects our commitment to consumer safety. We are fully cooperating with the relevant authorities and have also launched an internal investigation to ensure complete transparency," she wrote.
