The Namibian karate team that departed last week to participate in the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Karate Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, has fulfilled their promise by returning home with medals. The team, consisting of 56 athletes, achieved a total of 42 medals in the championship held from 8 to 11 June. Among these were four gold, 14 silver and 24 bronze medals.
The gold medals were awarded to Maria-Lisa Shikalepo in the children’s female kumite section of 10 to 11 years above 40 kg; Wehan Alderdt Groenewald in the children’s male kumite section of 10 to 11 years above 45 kg; Ermano Harian van Wyk in the male under-14 kumite section below 53 kg and Cayden Jose Poulton for the u/14 individual male kata.
National coach for the Namibian karate team, Stefan van der Merwe, said: "Having recently only started as the new head coach of Namibian Karate, I cannot be prouder of our athletes’ performances this weekend.
