Nigel Mubita has made a notable impact in Namibian agriculture through his venture, Chick-Lette Farm, which was established in 2019.
As the co-founder of this small-scale agricultural enterprise, Mubita has been committed to enhancing local food security and supporting community development.
Chick-Lette Farm, located in Groot Aub, was established in partnership with Mao Mpoyi and is focused on piggery, poultry and horticulture. The farm aims to address critical food supply issues while creating job opportunities in the region.
“Our mission with Chick-Lette Farm is not just to produce food but to contribute positively to our community. We want to help improve food security and provide employment, which is crucial for local economic development,” Mubita explained.
The farm’s activities include raising pigs for meat, poultry for eggs and meat and cultivating various vegetables.
This diverse approach allows Chick-Lette Farm to offer a range of products to the local market. “By diversifying our agricultural activities, we ensure a steady supply of produce and reduce the risk of market fluctuations affecting our business,” Mubita said.
Staying resilient
Mubita’s background in financial management has proved pivotal in running Chick-Lette Farm efficiently. His experience as a head dealer in stockbroking and his role as a trader at Agribank provided him with the skills necessary to manage and grow the farm. “Financial management is key to any successful business,” Mubita said. “It helps us make informed decisions, manage resources effectively and plan for future growth.”
Despite the success, Chick-Lette Farm has faced several challenges. One significant issue has been securing funding and dealing with logistical hurdles, such as customs delays for importing necessary equipment. “We’ve had our fair share of obstacles, but overcoming them has been part of the learning process,” Mubita explained. “The key is to stay resilient and find practical solutions to these challenges.”
Mubita emphasised the importance of perseverance and continuous learning in the agricultural sector. “Agriculture is a dynamic field with its own set of challenges and opportunities,” he said. “Staying informed about best practices and being adaptable are essential for success.”
Future plans
Looking ahead, Mubita aims to expand Chick-Lette Farm’s operations and impact. “Our goal is to grow the business to include more employees and increase our production capacity,” he said. “We also hope to reinvest some of our profits into furthering local agricultural initiatives and supporting the broader community.”
For aspiring farmers and entrepreneurs, Mubita offered practical advice: “Start with a clear vision and be prepared to face challenges. Seek guidance from experienced individuals and stay dedicated to your goals. Agriculture can be demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.”
