The annual Rough & Tough Rally for Cancer raised more than N$1.5 million last weekend.
The rally, which took place in Damaraland from 16 to 19 May, brought together car lovers and enthusiasts from all over Namibia.
“The event had over 430 participants from across the country, with more than 133 vintage cars raising funds for Namibia’s fight against cancer,” said CAN CEO Rolf Hansen.
Hansen said the funds will be used to decentralise critical healthcare services by supporting the Ministry of Health and Social Services to establish cancer clinics across the country and expand palliative care in Namibia.
In the same breath, Hansen dismissed the recent audio claim circulating on social media that the Covid-19 vaccines were causing a rise in cancer cases in Namibia. He explained that such data is untrue and is not published by the association, nor does the national cancer registry contain such information.
CAN has therefore distanced itself from this report. “This alleged ‘data’ has not been presented to anyone, has not been fact-checked, and none of it appears to add up. Epidemiology (data about diseases) is not a game, but a science,” he emphasised. Hansen added that Namibia's National Cancer Registry works with CAN and that the statistics on new cases do not match this misinformation.
