In a significant move to promote national unity and pride through sport, the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), unveiled the new national supporters jersey at the Government Information Centre in Windhoek yesterday.
The jersey, which can be worn by fans of all sports codes, will be available in predominantly blue, red and white options, representing the national colours of Namibia.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to brand Namibia through sport and foster a sense of unity and national identity among citizens.
The unveiling of the jersey follows a month-long design competition that invited creative submissions from the public. The competition winner walked away with a cash prize of N$6 000, while the runner-up received N$4 000.
The final design of the jersey incorporates elements of the country's flag, with the blue, red and white colors prominently featured.
At the launch event, the Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, emphasized the importance of the initiative in promoting national identity.
“With the introduction of the official supporters' jerseys, we aim to enhance the visibility of our national identity,” Tjongarero said.
“Supporters play a crucial role in branding Namibia through sport. I am proud that the NSC, MICT and various stakeholders have collaborated to bring this project to life. This initiative will be remembered as a unifying force for our nation, echoing the vision of our late President, who envisioned ‘Building a Namibian House where no one is left out’.”
The launch of the national supporters jersey marks a milestone in the ongoing efforts to use sport as a vehicle for unity and national pride.
Fans across Namibia are encouraged to don the jersey at sporting events, symbolizing their support for the nation’s athletes and their shared identity as Namibians.
